Klamath Wingwatchers is a non-profit organization dedicated to public education regarding Klamath Basin wildlife and wetland habitat and their value as a natural resource.
The Klamath Basin provides a home and resting place for hundreds of species of wildlife, more than any other area in the western United States. The Klamath wetlands have the largest concentration of migrating waterfowl found on the continent. In addition over 500 bald eagle utilize the region's wetlands for foraging between November and April An ever increasing number of visitors seek to enjoy the diversity of species and wildlife habitats in the Basin. However the major aspect of wildlife viewing missing is a hub for visitors adjacent to the Klamath Falls urban area that would identity the variety of experiences available. The concept is for a south portal project which would ultimately provide a site for this service.
To help fill this void, Klamath Wingwatchers, Inc, a nonprofit corporation has created a wetland/wildlife interpretive area bordering Lake Ewauna in Klamath Falls. This project fulfills the following objectives:
- Educates the public about the importance of wetlands as a natural resource
- Serves as an urban nature educational center for local residents
- Focuses attention on the area as a destination for wildlife viewing.
Klamath Wingwatchers has developed a 1.1 mile long, wheelchair accessible trail along the western shore of Lake Ewauna. Along this trail, Wingwatchers has planted over 1100 trees, shrubs and other plants that provide shelter and food for the many species of wildlife that utilize the area. Note also the constructed waterfowl nesting islands in the pond. Future plans call for expanding and paving the trail system; installing interpretive signs, displays, wildlife viewing platforms and blinds; and constructing a wetland/wildlife interpretive center.
Please park at the Veterans Park parking lot and walk across the bridge to the trailhead. Note our proximity to the Link River Trail and plan on experiencing both.
You will notice an installed eagle perch along the Lake Ewauna Interpretive Trail. It is used year-round by wintering and nesting Bald Eagles and is easily visible from Highway 97 near the downtown exit to Klamath Falls.
The Lake Ewauna Interpretive Area is a wildlife area and there are certain activities that are not compatible with the wildlife and others using it. To maintain maximum protection to wildlife and enjoyment to you and others please:
