2023 HOST HOTELS

We are partnering with host hotels for the 2023 Winter Wings Festival. They will offer discounted festival rates and are about 15-20 minutes from the Oregon Tech campus.  Use their booking engines to book your reservation to minimize second-party fees to our host hotels. BIRDING DESTINATIONS

For information about all of the birding spots in the Basin, you may purchase the A Birder’s Guide to the Klamath Basin during the online registration or at the KBAS Sales Table at the Student Union during the Festival.

We also recommend the Klamath Basin Audubon Society website for general information, the Klamath Basin Birding News for the lastest in what unusual birds are being seen and the Klamath Basin Birding website for a local calendar and birding events.

Special Note on Klamath and Tulelake National Wildlife Refuges: The extreme drought in the Klamath Basin has adversely affected the habitat available at these two refuges which should be the crown jewels of the Basin. In addition, the Visitor’s Center is current closed due to construction. You are welcome to visit these refuges but expect limited birding and photography opportunities in 2022 -2023.

What about Transportation to the Festival?

The nearest airport is in Medford Oregon (MFR). It is about 1 1/2 hours driving time to Klamath Falls via Hiway 140. Area roads may have snow or ice so AWD or 4×4 vehicles are recommended if you rent a car. AMTRAK has service south from Portland, Salem, and Eugene and north from San Francisco area and Sacramento on the Coast Starlight. We encourage Audubon chapters to take advantage of group train tour options or form car pools.

What about Transportation during the Festival?

Look at the program description and symbols to determine the method of transportation used on the field trips. The Festival rents bus or shuttle vans for many  trips. You will need to get to the meeting point to board them. Bus and taxi service is limited in Klamath Falls so keep that in mind when you develop your itinerary. Trips that use carpools are so designated in the description.
