Robert Mesta

Eagle Expert

Workshops:

Robert Mesta is an expert on the recovery of endangered birds of prey. As an ornithologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, he has spent his entire professional career working to protect and recover threatened and endangered North American birds.

Robert has directed national level programs to recover the bald eagle, the peregrine falcon, and the California condor. Throughout his career he has studied eagles in Alaska, the western United States and northwest Mexico, and he is a nationally recognized authority on the bird.

In the winter, the Klamath Basin hosts the largest population of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. The wetlands of the Klamath Basin attract approximately 80% of the Pacific Flyway's waterfowl, which in turn provide a food source for as high as 1,100 eagles in the Basin. For 15 years, Robert has been introducing Festival participants to this unique winter gathering of bald eagles.
