Workshops:
Karen Cottrel has been a Falconer for 41 yrs. When she met her husband, Larry, he was interested in Falconry. Karen says, "Just being around when he got his first bird was fun and interesting." Karen and Larry have shared an interest in Falconry throughout their entire marriage.
Karen has flown both hawks and falcons. Her current bird, a peregrine named "Stink", has been with her for 4 years since its birth. "Stink" is the female baby of a male peregine Karen received from a friend. Karen used artificial insemination with Larry's female peregrine who then incubated the eggs, hatched and raised Stink to 27 days old. Karen and her husband brought Stink inside and she has been a part of the family since then. Stink likes and tolerates their dogs. Stink got her name as a baby playing in the playpen. After she fledged, she was still playful. Karen says, "The breeding of birds was an extension of having birds to fly. We could trap a bird from the wild, but to have certain birds, you had to get them from breeders, so we raised our own."
Karen has been a resident of the Klamath area for 36 years and has been breeding raptors for 24 yrs. She has helped train 7 apprentices. She and Ron Richter have been teaching classes about Falconry for 3 years.
