Dan is a graduate of the Forestry School at Oregon State University with 40 years experience in managing timberlands in Oregon. He is also a fifth generation Oregonian.
Dan has worked for the J-Spear Ranch Co. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Modoc Lumber Co.) for 20 years, and has been responsible for managing the timber lands on the 33,000 acre J-Spear Ranch Co. ownership for 10 of those years. The Ranch owns timberland in Klamath and Lake Counties in Oregon.
The timberlands have always been managed on a sustainable harvest philosophy maintaining a goal of a continuous forested condition while providing species and tree size diversity on each acre. This commitment to providing a continuous and long-term flow of forest products from the timber stands is done through the uneven-aged management philosophy where each tree harvested is selected and marked by a professional forester. Harvesting contractors are closely monitored to insure long-term goals of maintaining and protecting the resources. State-of-the-art forestry science is used to insure that harvests meet these goals while considering timber growth, forest health, diversity, wildlife habitat, fire protection, etc.
Dan has found that managing a commercial timberland for long-term profitability does not have to be detrimental to providing habitat for wildlife, especially birds. Well-managed and sustainable-managed timberlands can and do provide a wide diversity of habitat that can improve and maintain populations of many species of wildlife and birds.
