THE DETOURS

The Detours: (left to right) Jesse Anocibar,
Rachel Brandsness, Ben Morton, Jake Coker,
and Steve Vetter

The Detours change direction as youth plays the classic rock sound. The Detours add a variety of contemporary rock with the classics and ballads.

The Detours have been a popular attraction at the Klamath Falls Third Thursday street fairs, the Klamath Centennial, Fourth of July celebration and have "rocked the house" at The Creamery. The Detours are especially proud of their fundraiser concert for the victims of hurricane Katrina in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Starting as a garage band to play one song at a junior high school talent show, their instant popularity inspired them to prolong the journey. Rachel, Jake and Jesse, three of the original six band members, later added Steve and Ben to complete the current band. The Detours continue their popularity playing music well before their time with precision, emotion and style that can only be said to be beyond their years as freshmen and sophomores at Klamath Union High School.

Lead and acoustic guitarist, Rachel Brandsness, 16, born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, has played guitar for 3 years, and most recently added the mandolin. At school, Rachel plays symphonic and jazz trumpet. She would like to study music production and composition in college and one day write and play music full time, hopefully making it to the top of the Billboard charts. Rachel's biggest influences are her favorite guitarist, Heart's Nancy Wilson, and Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page. According to lead singer Ben Morton, she s-h-r-e-d-s the guitar.

Bassist and vocalist, Jake Coker, 14, was born in Spokane, Washington. He has been playing the bass for 2 1/2 years. Jake is accomplished at another four-string instrument, the cello, playing arousing solos with the KUHS orchestra. Jake's heartfelt vocals are new to The Detours. In addition he plays soccer, wrestles, and sings in the choir. He would like to continue in a band as a career.

Drummer, Jesse Anocibar, 15, was born in Riverside, California. Jesse has played drums since kindergarten, and continued percussion and rhythm with the symphonic and jazz bands. Jesse's driving beat is influenced by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Buddy Rich, and Neil Peart. Jesse hopes to drum his way to scholarship to the University of Oregon, and be a part of the U of O Drum Line. Jesse is an avid soccer player and fan and enjoys running track.

Rhythm guitarist, Steve Vetter, 15, was born in Monterey, California. Steve has played guitar for 5 years, and provides a solid backing for the leads and vocals of the band. Steve plays violin in the KUHS orchestra, and has recently taken to playing drums. Steve enjoys a good game of golf. His influences include Dave Grohl and the band Incubus. He hopes to continue playing in a band.

Lead singer, Ben Morton, 15, was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon and has been singing for 2 1/2 years. As the last addition to The Detours, Ben is new to Rock vocals, but it fits his personality perfectly. His hobbies include playing poker, singing, playing basketball, and distance running. Ben's influences include Jack Johnson and Led Zeppelin. Ben aspires to become a doctor.

SOUL'D OUT

Soul'D Out: (left to right) Gene Griffith, Earl Boyd,
Dave "Doc" Ditto, Al "Sonny" Bilka

Klamath Falls is privileged to have the seasoned talents of four local artists who play Blues and Rhythm-and-Blues favorites that will make you want to get up and dance. The band also incorporates a Latin feeling on some of their Blues tunes. They have a great full sound and play all of their tunes with feeling and "soul". The band enjoys playing for their audiences as much as the audiences enjoy hearing them.

Earl Boyd provides lead vocal and plays a bass guitar. He has played music most of his life, backing up many notable entertainers such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin in New York, and has also worked at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Before retiring, Earl was an electronics engineer for Hughes Aircraft in California. Earl now lives in Klamath Falls with his wife, Diana.

Gene Griffith is the band's main guitar man. Gene plays guitar like he was born with it in his hands. He comes from Washington, D.C., where he performed with many bands. Gene has a Fine Arts degree and was a professional photographer for the U.S. government. He is now an Internet entrepreneur, living in Klamath Falls with his wife, Mari Jo, and their son, aged 5 years, and daughter, aged 11 years.

Dave "Doc" Ditto is the backbone of the band with his expertise in percussion instruments. Dave has played music all of his life and performed with many notable bands while living in San Francisco. He came to Klamath Falls 25 years ago with his wife, Nancy. Their son recently returned from military service in Iraq. Their daughter is a pharmacist in Portland, OR. Dave is a retired chiropractor. He currently plays with the Klamath Symphony as well as with Soul'D Out..

Al "Sonny" Bilka loves to connect with the audience through his saxophone. He performs back up music for the band as well as solos. He has worked with various recording artists throughout the years, including such singers as Louis Jordon, Joe Houston, and Chubby Checker. Al had his own band back in the '60's. Al helps his wife, Jenny, with her store, Armour Antiques in Klamath Falls. Al and Jenny have two children, Monika, aged 25 years, and Louis, aged 24 years.
